The City of Penticton was planning on dumping some older public washrooms, however a nearby amusement park wants to take on the load instead.

The potties occupy 0.1 acres of public space and LocoLanding Adventure Park, which operates on parkland leased from the city, has requested to have that bit of space become part of its lease.

Doing so will save Penticton the $15,000 to $20,000 it would otherwise cost to demolish the facilities, according to the staff recommendation, which is on the agenda for the Jan. 17 council meeting. LocaLanding will be required to demolish the washrooms when its lease comes to an end. The current lease expires in 2039.

The washrooms are adjacent to LocoLanding. They were closed late in 2022 after new ones were built closer to Riverside Drive.

“The intention was to demolish the existing structure; however, with the request received from LocoLanding to retain the existing facility as part of their operations, staff have put the demolition on hold subject to Council’s decision,” the staff recommendation says.

The parcel of land is “irregularly shaped, restricting its future benefit and use for the public, should the washrooms be removed and the City take over maintenance of the lands... Considering the adjacency of the relatively small area of land that would be provided to LocoLanding, staff are recommending that the proposal be supported.”

There is no fee to enter LocoLanding.
