Penticton's famous peach pays tribute to local First Nations people

There's a new mural on Penticton's Peach Concession.

Penticton’s iconic Peach concession's latest message pays homage to the traditional territory of the Okanagan’s Syilx people, upon which the structure sits.

A new mural adorning the peach-shaped concession on Lakeshore Drive in Penticton depicts Munson Mountain with its Hollywood-esque white letters spelling out Penticton along with the Interior Salish word Snpintktn written on the image of Okanagan Lake below.

“We are honoured to reside and operate on the traditional territory of the Syilx peoples," Peach Concession manager Diana Stirling says. "This beautiful artwork by Johann Wessels is to respectfully show our gratitude to the people, the land and the water."

The Visit Penticton website describes the word Snpintktn as the origin of Penticton, and most often translated as "a place to stay forever," or more accurately, "a place where people live year-round.”

“For 7,000 years, our region has been home to the Syilx First Peoples, who were instrumental in helping the first European fur traders travel thought the Okanagan in the early 1800s,” the post to the tourism website reads.

"We are honoured to reside and operate on the traditional territory of the Syilx peoples," Peach Concession manager Diana Stirling says.
