PENTICTON - A suspect is in custody after an attempted carjacking at a Penticton shopping mall this morning.

Penticton RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Ted Manchulenko says police were called at around 8:45 a.m. today, Dec. 14, to the attempted carjacking in a mall parking lot. He won't say which mall in the city.

Manchulenko says a man approached the 37-year-old victim as she parked at the mall, demanding she get out of the car and hand over the keys.

When the woman refused, the suspect changed his tune, saying he needed money. She gave him a small quantity of cash and he took off on foot. The woman was not injured in the incident.

RCMP members, including plainclothes officers, were dispatched to the area and a suspect was arrested, Manchulenko says.

The 24-year-old Golden man is in custody and is expected to make a court appearance later today.

Manchulenko says RCMP commend the woman for her composure and brave actions during what he calls a random act.
