PENTICTON, BC –The Vees finished off their home opening weekend in style, scoring a 5-0 win over the visiting Cowichan Valley Capitals Saturday at the SOEC.

With the victory, the Vees swept their weekend schedule, as they won 4-1 one night earlier against the Merritt Centennials.

Like Friday, the Vees opened the scoring in the first period on the power-play. Max Coatta from the slot wired a wrist-shot over the glove of Robin Gusse at 6:09 for his team-leading seventh of the season; his second in the last three games.

Despite outshooting the Caps 10-2 in the opening period, the Vees carried just a 1-0 lead into the intermission. However, their persistence would pay off in the second period, as Cam Amantea kick-off what ended up being a three-goal outburst.

After some great fore-check work below the goal-line by the “Trench Line,” Amantea muscled his way to the near-post and jammed the puck underneath the pad of Gusse at 1:53; his third of the year and second in as many games.

Brett Beauvais put the Vees up by three when he bulged the twine on a power-play midway through the sandwich stanza. Beauvais took a cross-zone pass and wired a wrist-shot from the right-circle over the shoulder of the Capitals netminder at 12:45; his second and both coming on the power-play.

The Vees weren’t done there, as Travis Blanleil got in on the action in the final minutes of the period. Cody DePourcq broke into the Caps end down left-wing and threw a centering pass to Blanleil at the back-post. Blanleil took the pass at the goal-line and lobbed the puck over the goaltender and just inside the far-post at 16:19.

When the dust settled, the Vees scored three goals in a fifteen minute span in the middle frame and outshot the Caps 22-9 through two periods.

Ben Dalpe salted the game away in the third period when he finished off a two-on-one rush with Brad McClure. The Vees Captain made a nice play coming out of his own zone to beat the defenseman at center, before charging into the offensive end. McClure was looking pass the whole way, a fired a centering feed to Dalpe who wasted little time roofing a shot over the falling Caps netminder at 13:43; goals in back to back games for number eighteen.

Final Score: 5-0 Vees

Shots: 26-18 Vees

Power-Play: Vees 2/5 Cowichan Valley 0/5

Three Stars: 1) Cam Amantea 2) Riley Alferd 3) Brett Beauvais

Attendance: 1, 942

The Vees penalty-kill was excellent on Saturday, killing off all five Capital power-play opportunities. Going back to Wednesday in Vernon, the Vees have killed-off the last 10 power-plays against. Brett Beauvais, Cam Amantea and Cody DePourcq each finished with two points in the win. Olivier Mantha stopped all 18 shots he faced for his first career BCHL shutout.

The win bumps the Vees record to 6-2-0-0 and moves them into a share of first place in the Interior Division with the West Kelowna Warriors.

The Vees are back in action next Friday, October 4th when they travel to Salmon Arm to face the Silverbacks. The Vees return home the following night, October 5th, when they host the Alberni Valley Bulldogs; puck drop is slated for 6pm.
