Penticton residents woke up to a frightening surprise when they discovered an unknown man standing in their kitchen.
On March 13, the residents of a home on Atkinson Street confronted a man who had made his way into their home, according to an RCMP media release issued today, March 19.
He was nonaggressive and left on foot when asked, RCMP said.
The homeowner called 911 and frontline officers responded at around 4:30 a.m.
“This type of situation is a homeowner’s worst nightmare,” RCMP spokesperson Cpl. James Grandy said in the release. “The resident’s quick decision to call 911 was crucial in ensuring their own safety, and later in assisting officers in securing evidence which helped identify the suspect."
Officers arrived at the home with Police Dog Services and the Forensic Identification Section.
The suspect was not immediately located. Officers also found that no one had been injured and nothing valuable had been taken during the incident.
The motivation behind the intrusion is still being investigated.
“Subsequent to further investigation, a 35-year-old man, known to police, was later identified and arrested," Cpl. Grandy said. “RCMP will be forwarding details of their investigation to the BC Prosecution Service."
