Penticton hosted the first Ironman race in North America, and now the city is giving away banners to commemorate the last one held in the city this past summer.
Back in 1983, the gruelling long-distance triathlon series held its first event in North America in Penticton. This past August the last race in Penticton ended and the city has decided to give away the promotional banners that hung downtown.
“From the iconic course, stunning landscapes and the welcoming host community, all roads lead to the Okanagan,” Ironman Canada said on its website.
Folks who want one of the 36 banners can enter a draw online and the winners will be selected on Sept. 26. Winners will be notified by email and they can pick their banners up on Oct. 4.
The city put the banners up each year for the event, and has decided to give them away since there won’t be any more in the future. There are swimming, running and biking banners but winners won’t be able to pick which one they get.

“This race's impact was pivotal, fostering the growth of our sport in ways unimaginable, and for that, we are grateful. Over the years, numerous remarkable professional and age group athletes have competed in Penticton. Athletes and families come back year after year to Penticton due to the strong sense of community fostered by the city, and that is truly what makes this place so special,” Ironman Canada said.
The banners are two feet by four feet and are dirty since they were hung outside.
Triathletes who still want to compete in Ironman races can compete in Calgary or Victoria in the future.
