PENTICTON - The spring season is upon us, and with it comes the annual opening of the Penticton Farmers Market.

The market opens for its 28th season on Saturday, April 21 at 8:30 a.m. in the 100 block of Main Street in Penticton.

Early season produce will be available Saturday, including greens, rhubarb and asparagus, locally roasted coffee, fresh baking, handmade crafts, bedding plants, eggs and honey.

A selection of local liquor vendors will also be at the market.

“It's a very exciting time of year. Customers in the South Okanagan look forward to opening day. The market gets people outside. It’s a fun place to shop, see friends, and check out what’s new this season,” market manager Erin Trainer says.

The market society works hard to maintain a truly authentic farmer’s market in Penticton. Newly elected President Emile Thoueille says the market only allows vendors from the South Okanagan, who must bake or grow everything they bring to the market. The owner or the primary producer of the product must also participate in the market, she says.

Motorists are reminded starting April 21, the 100 block of Main Street will be closed to traffic from 6 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. each Saturday through Oct.27.

The Downtown Community Market, operating in the 200 block and along Front Street, opens on Saturday, May 22.
