Ashley Fagan sent out one simple message this weekend on a Penticton community Facebook page and people sat up and took note.

“Our family is opening up our home on Christmas day for a hot meal and a warm place to eat it. Our treat. We might not have much but we will welcome you with open arms with our friends and family,” Fagan posted online.

“(You) must love animals and kids, of course, but (I'd) like to offer anyone in need a lovely Christmas environment with love and music...let me know if you like to be a part of it.”

The message went up over the weekend and hundreds of people offered their approval. Some remarked how generous it was, others came up with ways to help offset the expense.

Fagan doesn’t know how it will all roll out but said she’s glad to have made the offer.

“It’s nothing, really,” she said. “I like to help people when I can... I don't think people should be alone or hungry especially on Christmas.”

Fagan lived on the streets and remembers having no place to go for Christmas and said if she can save one person the misery of that experience she’s happy to do so.

“It's the least I can do and it’s also an amazing learning experience for my children to show them to love people and care for people who need it and to be grateful for what you have,” she said.

Christmas isn’t about receiving, she said, it’s about giving and spreading love and it’s something she wants her children to understand as they get older.

“On Thursday we are also handing out Christmas cards and cookies to our entire block … (I’m) taking my children door to door handing out the gift of home-baked chocolate chip cookies,” she said.

To get in touch with Fagan find her on facebook and she will share how to get in touch for Xmas.
