KAMLOOPS - Six people have died from suspected overdoses in 10 days in Kamloops.
Interior Health and the B.C. Coroners Service are urging users to take steps to prevent overdose in the wake of the increase.
According to a news release from Interior Health, preliminary data from the B.C. Coroners Service shows there were six suspected overdose deaths in a 10-day period in the Kamloops area earlier this month.
The health authority did not specify when the overdoses took place, only saying earlier this month.
Interior Health says people considering using drugs experimentally or recreationally are asked to avoid using drugs.
Anyone using is advised to take several steps, including not mixing different drugs not taking drugs alone, keeping an eye on your friends, use less and pace yourself, carry a naloxone kit and know how to use it, and recognizing the signs of an overdose including slow or no breathing, gurgling or gasping, lips and fingertips turning blue, and difficult to awaken or non-responsive.
If someone is experiencing or witnessing an overdose, follow the SAVE ME steps and call 9-1-1 immediately. Users are also urged to consider treatent options and take advantage of the mobile supervised consumption services available in Kamloops.
