VERNON - The countdown is on for Canada Day festivities in Vernon.

The North Okanagan Canada Day Society promises the event will be the biggest ever held in Vernon.

The July 1 activities will kick off in Polson Park at 10 a.m. with the official opening ceremonies and cake cutting starting at 12 p.m.

“We are excited to announce there is something for everyone,” president Dave Frost says in a media release. “Along with an expanded Extreme Motocross show, ATV rides, (and) more wagon rides by O’Keefe Ranch we will also have a freestyle skateboard competition hosted by Vernon’s very own Okanagan Skate Co.”

There will also be a line up of stage events as well as food vendors, a dunk tank, bouncy castles, mini golf, military display by the B.C. Dragoons and carnival games presented by Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Fireworks will be on display in the evening at Kin Beach on Okanagan Lake. The fireworks will be set off at 10:30 p.m. from a barge on the lake. The best views will be from Kin Beach, Sandy Beach and Paddlewheel Park (depending on flood levels and beach conditions). There are also vantage points on Bella Vista and Bench roads for those who wish to view the display from a distance.
