KAMLOOPS - The holiday season kept the volunteers with Operation Red Nose in Kamloops busy in its 22nd year, while donations exceeded expectations.

"We ended up giving overall 1,313 rides which is phenomenal," says fundraising coordinator Shannon Guglielmini. "I haven't done my total yet but we are probably looking at around $32,000 from the community in donations."

Some of the busiest nights for the volunteers included New Year's Eve, where there were 180 rides given and 20 teams of volunteers out.

Weekends were also busy for the month of December, Guglielmini explained.

"The Saturday's are always busy in December," she says. "Like the 15th we did 150 rides and around the 22nd we did 150 rides as well, so those were very busy nights for us."

Guglielmini says they had around 350 volunteers this year.

Operation Red Nose is a volunteer operation which offers people a safe ride home in their own vehicles by a designated driver, followed by an escort vehicle. The campaign operates strictly from donations that go towards PacificSport, a not-for-profit society to support amateur athletes trying to achieve their next level in sports.

There are 100 communities across Canada with Operation Red Nose in their area.
