Opening burning prohibited in Kamloops Fire Centre

A fire investigator works on Knox Mountain in Kelowna after a wildfire, July, 2017.

An opening burning ban is now in effect across the Cariboo, Kamloops, Southeast and Coastal Fire Centres.

The ban was implemented this afternoon, July 15, and includes category two and three open fires, fireworks and sky lanterns, according to the B.C. Wildfire Service.

The Kamloops Fire Centre spans the Blue River in the north to the U.S. border in the south and from Bridge River in the west to Monashee Mountains in the east, including the Southern Okanagan and the Lytton and Lillooet area.

Definitions of category two and three open fires can be found on the service's website.

"This prohibition does not apply to cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes or campfires (half metre high by half metre wide, or smaller)," according to the service.

A wildfire near Lytton is currently burning at 800 ha in size since it started yesterday, July 14. Multiple structures on Lytton First Nation land have burned and evacuation orders are in effect. It is one of the province's largest wildfires and is burning out of control.
