Open House at Glenmore Landfill

KELOWNA - The City of Kelowna will host a public open house at the Glenmore Landfill on Tuesday, Feb. 21, to offer an in-depth look at future plans for the facility, including a proposed revision to the current fill plan which would extend the life of the landfill up to 25 years.

Date:                    Tuesday, February 21
Time:                    4 p.m. – 7 p.m.
Location:            Glenmore Landfill
                                2710-2720 John Hindle Drive, Kelowna, BC V1V 2C5

Everyone is welcome to attend and provide feedback. City staff will be on hand to speak to programs and initiatives that are ongoing or taking shape at the landfill including:

·         Landfill gas management technology in association with FortisBC Gas;
·         Leachate management and odour control; and
·         Sustainable energy features incorporated into the administration building.

“They may not be top-of-mind, but landfills are critical in any community and we’ve made progress over the last few years to make ours even more sustainable,” said Andrew Reeder, Utility Planning Manager. “The changes we’re proposing to the fill plan would give us an opportunity to extend the life of our landfill. We would need to lay the groundwork for these fill plan changes soon to have the ability to recognize this flexibility in the future.”

Owned and operated by the City of Kelowna, the Glenmore Landfill serves as the solid waste disposal facility for residents within the Central Okanagan Regional District. The landfill offers a variety of waste management options on site including a recycling centre, and disposal of organic materials, household and commercial waste.
