A GoFundMe started last night to support the Lytton community has raised more than $40,000 in 13 hours.

The village of roughly 250 people was evacuated last night, June 30, as fire ravaged the town. MP for the Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon Brad Vis reported the town sustained structural damage and 90% of the village is burned, including the centre of town. Injuries have also been reported.

The fire is estimated to be 8,000 hectares in size.

The Savage Society, an Indigenous non-profit, started the fundraiser with the 2 Rivers Remix Society, a Lytton non-profit, on behalf of Lytton residents. It has a goal of $50,000.

“This is in response to a wildfire in the community of Lytton, B.C., hometown of our artistic director Kevin Loring,” the Savage Society wrote on the GoFundMe page.

The evacuation of Lytton has prompted an outpouring of support from residents across the province, who have offered their homes, as well as donations and resources for fire victims.

The funds will be used to provide both immediate needs and for re-establishment purposes, according to the society.

Funds will be received and distributed by the Savage Society.

The GoFundMe can be found here.
