KAMLOOPS - One person is in custody following a fire at a local motel yesterday, as RCMP investigate a potential arson.

The fire destroyed one unit and affected neighbouring hotel rooms at the Star Lodge motel on Columbia Street yesterday, Nov. 11, Kamloops Fire Rescue Platoon Capt. Rob Chalmers says.

“There were no injuries from what we saw and it’s sort of a mixture of long-term and short-term tenants there. I’m not sure how many were displaced,” he says, adding firefighters received the call around 1:40 p.m.

Chalmers says fire investigators plan to return to the property today to continue investigating the cause of the fire.

Manga Basi, who owns the property, says RCMP members took one woman into custody following the incident.

“Police told me one woman was arrested,” Basi say, noting the woman stayed at the hotel for two nights and yesterday was her check-out day.

Cpl. Cheryl Bush, confirms a 34-year-old woman is in custody in relation to an arson investigation. Bush says police continue to investigate the event.
