MONACO - Canada has been drawn in a pool with Germany, Uruguay and Sri Lanka at the Olympic rugby sevens qualifying tournament next month in Monaco.

The Canadian men will be battling 15 other teams June 18-19 for the last spot in the 12-country Olympic field this summer in Rio.

Tournament favourite Samoa heads up Pool A with Zimbabwe, Tonga and Ireland. Pool C features Russia, Chile, Morocco and Tunisia while Pool D consists of Hong Kong, Spain, Mexico and South Korea.

Samoa has the best credentials among the 16 teams in Monaco, having won an event on the HSBC World Series this season and finished ninth in the overall standings. Canada was 13th while Russia was 14th.

Already qualified for Rio are host Brazil, Argentina, Australia, Britain, Fiji, France, Japan, Kenya, New Zealand, South Africa, and the U.S.

Monday's draw was done by Prince Albert and Princess Charlene of Monaco.

The women's repechage tournament goes June 25-26 in Dublin. Canada has already qualified for the women's field in Rio de Janeiro.
