Several years after it was closed to the public, a hiking trail that explores parts of Summerland's history has finally reopened.

The 4.5-kilometre Centennial Trail has been closed since it was washed out by flooding in 2017 and 2018. "The trail explores the area that was the first townsite of Summerland when the elegant sternwheeler ships plied the lake bringing adventurous settlers to the small lakeside community," according to the District of Summerland.

"About 30 meters before the trail exits the woods, a climb up a grassy hillside takes you to Bristow Road which heads south to a junction with Solly Road. Interpretive signage explains the grand view below; the site of Summerland’s first hospital and the sweeping vista of Okanagan Lake and the original townsite of Summerland."

District work to repair the trail required provincial approval due to the sensitive riparian area. Activity was paused temporarily to protect nesting birds, the District of Summerland announced in August.

“The district has now received the green light to restart the careful rehabilitation of this natural trail.”

Now it's finally open, the district announced via Facebook today, Oct. 14.

“Good news! The Centennial Trail has now been reopened to safe public access and enjoyment.”

The trailhead can be found off of Peach Orchard Road by the Highway 97 underpass.
