Okanagan landscaping company scammed victims out of thousands of dollars

Vernon RCMP are warning the public about a scammers using Facebook ads after two residents ost $16,000.

The victims believed they were paying an Okanagan-based landscaping company for work and materials, according to an RCMP press release.

However, the supposed contractor was never heard from again. Both victims connected were scammed through a Facebook ad.

“Unfortunately, both victims ended up paying thousands of dollars up front in deposits for work that was not completed or even started,” Const.e Chris Terleski said in the release. “The Vernon North Okanagan RCMP wants to remind residents of the importance of being diligent and double checking before hiring a contractor for home renovations or projects.”

The police recommend raising suspicious when someone asks for cash only or full payment up front. It’s a good idea to ask for references, a business license, and to get several written quotes.

And before making a deal with a contractor – discuss it with a knowledgeable, trustworthy person first.

“Home renovation and improvement projects can often involve large sums of money and there are reputable companies and people in the business,” Terleski said. “You need to take your time and go through the right steps to find them.”
