Okanagan Indian Band care aids are delivering hot meals to elders in need.

Chief Byron Lewis said in a YouTube video posted by the band this morning, that the meal program has been in progress for the last three weeks.

Care aids are delivering two hot meals a week to band members, he said in the video. “ Today, we’ll be delivering approximately 50 hot meals to elders and those requiring assistance through the home and community care program.”

“This program will continue until things are normal,” he said, adding that the meals will be nutritious and well balanced.

Members need to self isolate, practice social distancing and avoid close contact with elders, he said. “We need to protect them because they could be seriously compromised by this disease."

The band is also delivering boxed food to band households once a week for those in need.

Calls to the OKIB were not immediately returned.
