Niagara Falls says wire walker Wallenda still owes $25K for public safety costs

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. - The city of Niagara Falls says daredevil Nik Wallenda still owes about $25,000 for public safety costs from last month's tightrope walk across the Falls, and it's having a tough time collecting.

Mayor Paul Dyster says the state legislation that granted permission for the walk required that Wallenda cover security and law enforcement costs. Dyster says the city spent about $43,000, mostly for police and fire overtime. He says it has received $17,500 so far, but that the Wallenda team wants the city to forget about the rest.

Wallenda representatives didn't immediately respond to phone and email messages Friday.

Wallenda walked a tightrope across Niagara Falls from the U.S. to Canada June 15. Niagara Falls, Ontario Mayor Jim Diodati told The Buffalo News (http://bit.ly/NGyakj ) he's not expecting full reimbursement for security.
