ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The mother of actor Philip Seymour Hoffman says there will be public celebrations of her son's life in both New York City and Rochester this spring.

The Rochester Democrat & Chronicle (http://on.rocne.ws/1lr1vU3) reports Hoffman's mother Marilyn O'Connor also wanted to thank her friends and her son's fans for all of their kind words after his death.

A friend read the retired judge's statement Friday during a film series honouring Hoffman. The statement read by retired film critic Jack Garner said Hoffman was "a gift" to O'Connor for 46 years.

Hoffman was found dead Feb. 2 in his Manhattan apartment. The New York City medical examiner said Friday he was killed by a toxic mix of drugs including heroin and cocaine.

Hoffman grew up just outside Rochester.
