Clyfford Still painting coming to NYC auction in May

NEW YORK, N.Y. - One of the few remaining Clyfford Still paintings in private hands is coming up for auction in New York City next month.

"PH-234, 1948" is estimated to bring $25 million to $35 million at Christie's post-war and contemporary art sale on May 10. It was included in a retrospective of the abstract expressionist's work at The Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C., in 2001.

Most of Still's works are in collections and museums, including at the Clyfford Still Museum in Denver, Colorado.

The work was exhibited in Still's first solo show in 1951 at the Betty Parson Galley in New York City.

In a release, Christie's called the composition "dynamic, almost topographical."

This story has been corrected to show the high end of the pre-sale estimate is $35 million, not $25 million.
