NEW YORK - Gov. Andrew Cuomo says work has started to establish a new state park on a 400-acre New York City site that includes two landfills closed since in the early 1980s.
The Democrat released details of the plan for the Brooklyn park on Thursday, a day after delivering his 2018 agenda to the Legislature in his state of the state address.
Cuomo says the park will be located on land on Jamaica Bay's north shore that included two city landfills closed in 1983 and deeded to the National Park Service. The city spent 17 years cleaning up the parcel, with restoration completed in 2009.
The governor says the state parks office, the city and National Park Service will develop and operate a public park that will include hiking and biking trails and waterfront activities.
