RCMP double size of detachment in Nunavut community where officers shot at

KIMMIRUT, Nunavut - The RCMP is doubling the size of its detachment to four officers in a troubled Nunavut community where Mounties have been shot at eight times over the last six years.

Supt. Hilton Smee says two extra constables will remain stationed in Kimmirut (KIMM'-ihr-root) on the south coast of Baffin Island for as long as they are needed.

The hamlet is also setting up a committee to look at issues such as safe firearm storage.

A healing ceremony is to held for people to deal with lingering emotions from some of the attacks, including the fatal shooting of Const. Douglas Scott in 2007.

A meeting between the senior RCMP officers and the community about the shootings was held Friday.

Smee says it was very emotional, with many expressing strong support for the force and concern over what is happening.
