Not much rain expected his week to ease dry conditions in Kamloops, Okanagan

Last night's cold front brought ideal winds for kite surfers on Skaha Lake. This week's weather won't be as warm as last week's, with only a chance of showers.

Kamloops and Okanagan residents can expect sunny skies and cooler temperatures to start the week before a weather system brings a chance of rain around mid-week.

The strong winds yesterday, April 18, that brought in a cold front to end the warm weather failed to bring showers with them, Environment Canada meteorologist Doug Lundquist says.

“It’s been very dry for a month and a half, and last night’s cold front didn’t help, other than to cool things down a bit. We are looking at another cold front on the way for Wednesday night into Thursday,” Lundquist says.

Only a few millimetres of rain is expected with that front, with maybe a few more millimetres at higher elevations, but Lundquist says the longer term does start to look like a return to a more unstable, cooler pattern – although there are not extended rain events on the horizon.

“It still matters what happens in May and June in terms of a flood or fire threat. There is some hint it will get wetter, and those months are our wet season. It looks like it could get cooler and unsettled to end April, but things can change fast,” Lundquist says.

Kamloops and the Okanagan can expect to see highs ranging from 17 Celsius to 22 C through to Wednesday before temperatures dip to the mid-teens along with clouds and possible showers after Wednesday.

The weekend is expected to be a mix of sun and clouds with highs of 16 C and 17 C in Kamloops. The Okanagan forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies on Saturday and a 60 per cent possibility of showers for Sunday, and highs of 14 C and 15 C respectively.

The normal daily high and low for Kamloops this time of year is 18 C and 4 C. In Vernon, Kelowna and Penticton, the normal high and low is usually 16 C and 3 C.
