For many of us, our cars are more than just vehicles to transport us from point A to point B. They are often our office, our home away from home or a way for us to escape for some R & R.
Because we spend a fair amount of time in our vehicles, there are likely a few must-have features; maybe it’s air conditioning, a sun roof, backup camera or great sound system. While we can easily find most of these in cars off the lot, not all vehicles are equipped with the features important to us, or a stereo system that performs to our standard. But choosing a new or upgraded car audio system can be challenging.
There are a number of factors to consider when outfitting your car with new in-car electronics. Analyzing what you want and need; audio, video or both, considering how much time you spend in your car, the type of driving you do, the kind of music you like, whether you listen to music through your phone, CDs or other media device, what your budget is and what kind of electronics and speakers actually fit your vehicle are things to consider before choosing to upgrade your systems.
There are basically three main components of a car stereo or media system; the head unit which is the brain of the system, amplifiers which boost the system’s signal and power and speakers, which deliver the crystal clear sound.
If you rely on your phone for music, you want to be sure your system is equipped with a USB port and Bluetooth so you can stream music on your phone or from a streaming service. If you just can’t let go of your CD collection, like many of us, most CD receivers will play any type of formatted disc.
Our cars often become our offices, so having your system equipped with Bluetooth makes things very convenient and safe to receive calls, view caller ID, navigate and stream music wirelessly.
Enjoying long trips or even weekend getaways may mean you want a system that provides not only great sound, but protection on the road as well. Dash mounted cameras that record what’s happening can help provide piece of mind and allow for a recording of an event should anything happen.
Most modern cars on the road fit one or two sizes of aftermarket radios. But if you don’t want to change the factory system, that’s fine as higher performance sound system and features are easily added to many current factory radios.  The type of amplifier needs to be given consideration as well. Sizes of amplifiers vary greatly, some small enough to be hidden behind the dash board, while others will need to be mounted under a seat or in the trunk where they are safe. External amplifiers will provide considerably more sound delivery.
Your car’s amplifier needs to be a good fit with your speakers; meaning the number of speakers needs to be suitable to the amplifier and vice versa. The speakers are what bring all the technology together to deliver just the sound you are looking for, whether they are full range speakers, which generally cost a little less and take up less room, or component systems that are made up of subwoofer, tweeter and mid-range speakers.
Taking time and talking to the experts when considering different brands, prices, size, needs and space will ensure you get the system that’s right for you and your vehicle.
