UPDATE: Police have three in custody after fire at Rutland seniors centre

KELOWNA - Police have arrested three people and one is facing charges after an explosion created a fire that damaged the Rutland Community Centre and Seniors Activity Centre last night.

Const. Lesley Smith of Kelowna RCMP says at 1:34 a.m. police joined fire crews to reports of a fire at 765 Dodd Road.

"Patrolling officers and numerous witnesses heard an explosion coming from the direction of Dodd Road and then saw flames at the rear of the Community Centre," she says.

Witnesses said they heard a loud bang, then saw five or six youth leave the area.

“Police were able to view video surveillance footage at the scene which assisted with the police investigation and the identification of the suspects involved,” Smith says.

Three youth were arrested and one could be facing a charge of arson.

Kelowna Fire Dept. Platoon Capt. Scott Clarke said in a release they fought the fire from the inside and the exterior trying to save it.

"(We) were able to limit the damage to the structure, however part of the roof did sustain structural damage," Clarke said.

No one was inside at the time.
