No end in sight to spring-like weather in Okanagan, Kamloops

It feels like spring has sprung in Kamloops and the Okanagan and the forecast shows sunny days ahead.

“For the last half of February, we saw above normal temperatures with our daytime highs getting into the double digits and that trend has so far continued into March,” Environment Canada meteorologist Lisa Erven told iNFOnews.ca.

Kamloops and the Okanagan are expecting highs around 11 Celsius this week with a mix of sun and clouds until Sunday when there is a chance of showers. There is a chance of some rain at lower elevations and snow higher up tonight, March 4.

Skiers and snowboarders shouldn’t fear, but anyone driving through mountain passes should stay vigilant.

“We do have anywhere from about 5 to 8 centimetres in the forecast for the Coquihalla Summit, a few centimetres in for the Okanagan Connector. And with that, also some snow coming for the higher terrain to at least bring something to the ski resorts tonight into tomorrow morning,” she said.

This relatively warm winter is easing seamlessly into spring, but it has been quite dry in the Okanagan.

“Throughout the Okanagan itself, we received about 50 to 60 per cent of our typical wintertime precipitation. And then Kamloops is faring a little bit better up to about 80 per cent of its normal wintertime precipitation,” she said.

It might not seem like it, but Erven said it is important to be prepared for drastic shifts in weather by doing things like keeping your snow tires on through the end of April.

“Despite this recent warm pattern, mother nature can always throw surprises at us. Spring is a very dynamic season,” she said.

“If you have activities or travel that is weather sensitive, you really do need to keep checking back to the forecast every week and watch for those trends in both temperature and precipitation and just make sure you're prepared before you're headed outside.”
