Nine charges laid against North Okanagan standoff suspect

Police blocked off all accesses to Torrent Drive while they responded to reports of a distraught man with a gun.

COLDSTREAM - Multiple charges have been approved against a man at the centre of a lengthy standoff with police earlier this week in the North Okanagan.

Kelly Blake Torvik, 33, is charged with nine counts, including assault with a weapon, uttering threats and using a firearm, according to court documents.

Torvik allegedly assaulted a woman at a home on Torrent Drive on Feb. 5 before barricading himself inside with a firearm. It took police 15 hours before he was apprehended without incident.

Torvik remains in custody and is scheduled to have a bail hearing on Feb. 15, according to court records.

Torvik has a criminal record in Vernon dating back to 2005 when he was charged with assault causing bodily harm. He was sentenced to 18 months probation and ordered to pay a $1,500 fine.

In 2008, he was charged with breaking and entering, for which he earned an eight month conditional sentence order and had to pay $4,000 in restitution.

In 2010, he was charged with theft under $5,000 and was ordered to pay back a fine of $300. He was again charged with theft under $5,000 in 2013, for which he was handed a 12 month probation order and $500 fine.

His current charges include assault, assault with a weapon, uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, pointing a firearm, using a firearm to commit an offence, careless use or storage of a firearm, and two counts of possession of a firearm without a license or registration.
