Nicolas Cage shoots scene outside Vernon church for upcoming action thriller

Nicolas Cage shoots a scene for "A Score to Settle" in Vernon, Thursday, July 12, 2018.

VERNON - Filming for the Hollywood movie A Score to Settle starring Nicolas Cage drew many onlookers today while a scene was filmed outside a Vernon church.

A portion of 27 Street in front of Beairsto Elementary School was shut down today, July 12, as the film’s production crew took over the roadway. Some passersbys thought the activity was an accident due to the traffic control people, and emergency vehicles (a police car was being used on set).

Cage could be seen dressed in a button up shirt and beige jacket with fake blood smeared across his torso from apparent bullet wounds.

Locals watched intently while Cage repeated take after take — often simply lying on the steps of the All Saints Anglican Church, built in the 1930s. Onlookers were asked to keep quiet while cameras were rolling.

All Saints Anglican Church Rev. Chris Harwood-Jones says they were approached by the film crew, which was looking for a traditional-looking church in the Vernon area.

“It’s great fun,” Harwood-Jones says. “There was a call out for people to play wedding guests and a number of our parishioners have volunteered to be in the wedding crowd.”

He says the two-day rental fee for the building also helps with their fundraising efforts.

According to Deadline, Cage plays a convicted mob enforcer released from jail after taking the blame for a crime he didn’t commit. While also battling a terminal illness, he sets out for revenge against those who wronged him.

A casting call in May sought local extras to play hotel staff and guests, wedding guests, gang members, prisoners and guards, policemen, spa customers and seniors. The casting call was held May 26 in Kelowna.

Cage shot scenes for another movie, Humanity Bureau, in parts of the South Okanagan in late 2016.
