NHL beach party this Friday at Kal Lake

VERNON - Get ready to have a beach day with some of your favourite National Hockey League players past and present in a fundraiser event for the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation this weekend.

On Friday, July 10, the National Hockey League Players’ Association, along with 20 players, will be at Kalamalka Beach for autographs, beach volleyball and paddleboarding from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Players will also donate hockey equipment purchased through the association’s Goals and Dreams Fund to local hockey programs.

Kelly Hrudey, a broadcaster and former NHL goalie, will emcee the event which will feature a performance from local talent Andrew Allen.

Players attending include: Cam Atkinson, David Booth, Jason Chimera, Cory Cross, Byron Dafoe, Andrew Ference, Cody Franson, Josh Gorges, Scott Hartnell, Greg Hawgood, Kelly Hrudey, Curtis Lazar, Manny Malhotra, Dean McAmmond, Sandy Moger, Joe Reekie, Brayden Schenn, Luke Schenn, Jerred Smithson and Steve Webb are scheduled to attend.

An online auction for signed NHL jerseys began on June 22. Winners of the jerseys will be announced at 12:30 p.m. the day of the event. 

Tickets can be purcahse ahead of time at a suggested donation of $5. The tickets provide attendees with the opportunity to win a jersey, a chance to participate in paddleboard events and a food and drink voucher. Tickets are available at the Vernon Visitor Information Centre (3004 39 Ave.) or VJHF (2101 32 St.) Tickets are available at the door on the day of the event but will be cash only.

Nearby parking will be limited so the event has a planned shuttle service from the Okanagan College where parking will be free. Shuttles will begin at 10 a.m. with the last service expected to run at 4 p.m.

10 to 10:15 a.m. - Welcome
10 to 10:45 a.m. - Sale of passports
10:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. - Paddleboarding Polo
10:15 a.m. - 3 p.m. - VJH Foundation Kid Activities
11:30 a.m. to noon - Welcome & Introduction
Noon to 12:30 p.m. - NHLPA Goals & Dreams equipment donation
12:30 to 1 p.m. - Announcement of online auction jersey winners
12:30 to 2 p.m. - Celebrity paddleboard race with Mayors, NHL Players, local celebrities
12:30 to 2 p.m. - Paddleboard Relay Race
12:30 to 1 p.m. - Paddleboard Race with kids and NHL Players
12:30 to 2:30 p.m. - Autograph session with NHL Players
1 to 3 p.m. - Performance by Andrew Allen

Players are also taking part in a golf tournament on Thursday, July 9, at Predator Ridge.
