KAMLOOPS - A new urgent primary care and learning centre in Kamloops is getting ready to open its doors to the public.

B.C. Health Minister Adrian Dix held a media conference in Kamloops today, June 8, to announce the Kamloops Urgent Primary Care and Learning Centre will be opening on a limited basis later this month.

“Many people living in B.C. are unable to get same-day or next-day appointments with their primary-care providers,” Dix says in a Ministry of Health media release. “The Kamloops Urgent Primary Care and Learning Centre is going to make a real difference, by using a team-based model of care, to provide access to day-to-day care.”

The new centre will be located at 311 Columbia St. at the Royal Inland Hospital Clinical Services building. The ministry says the centre will open this month starting seven days a week in the evening only. Once the service becomes fully operational in the fall, services will be available from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. year-round.

Patients seeking services from the new centre will be able to see a range of healthcare professionals including doctors, physiotherapists and nurses, the ministry says. The services and programs offered at the new centre will make it easier for people to receive follow-up care and access other services.

In the fall, the centre will also open the Family Practice Learning Centre in partnership with the University of British Columbia, which will allow resident doctors to work under the supervision of experienced physicians.

The Kamloops Urgent Primary Care and Learning Centre is one of 10 primary care centres planned throughout the province. All centres are expected to open in the next 12 months.

The capital cost of the project in Kamloops was $3.4 million with the Thompson Regional Hospital District contributing $1.36 million.
