New RCMP unit to focus on Penticton's most vulnerable

Penticton RCMP have established a new unit to provide enhanced police investigations to the region's most vulnerable.

PENTICTON - Penticton RCMP have established a new crime-fighting unit within the detachment.

The Special Victims Unit has been created to enhance investigations involving the most vulnerable in society, RCMP say.

Penticton RCMP spokesperson Const. James Grandy says in a press release issued today, Sept. 23, the detachment assigned two plainclothes investigation officers to the team from the detachment's existing personnel.

The intention of the unit is to work closely with government and community agencies to protect and support victims of crimes of a sensitive nature, he says.

The team will conduct, support and provide insight on investigations involving such crimes as high-risk domestic violence offences, internet-based exploitation, serious sexual assaults, including those involving children.

“These kinds of sensitive investigations take a special kind of officer. The two assigned to this unit are highly trained and professional and will provide a much-needed complement to our front-line investigators,” Grandy says.
