KELOWNA – The Central Okanagan school district has announced the name of the new middle school coming to the Mission area of Kelowna.

And it isn’t Schooly McSchoolface.

“A lot of people responded with Father Pandosy and W.A.C. Bennett middle school, Myra Canyon and Crawford Falls middle school,” Secretary-treasurer Larry Paul said last month. “Some also responded with Schooly McSchoolface. It’s people having fun with names but it’s not even original.”

The new 700-student middle school will be called Canyon Falls Middle School.

"Canyon Falls Middle School is a name that received positive feedback from the community at the open house, so we're confident it will represent the residents of the area well,” board chair Moyra Baxter says.

The $36-million school for grades six through eight is scheduled to open in the South Ridge area in September 2019.

"The school now has an identity we can literally build on," Superintendent of schools Kevin Kaardal says in a media release. "We hope the name Canyon Falls Middle School will give the community a sense of pride in the school before it's even built, which will serve the learners from the area well as they look forward to attending a new school."
