KELOWNA - The Kelowna theatre scene is going to be buzzing this fall as the first annual Kelowna Fringe Festival takes to the stage for a weekend of original and daring plays.

In a press release, the Arts Council of the Central Okanagan announced they will be launching what is hoped to be an annual Fringe theatre festival in the heart of Kelowna's cultural district. The festival will launch on Sept. 19 and it will run until Sept. 22.

“We’re extremely excited to be bringing a true Fringe Festival to our region," said Arts Council executive director Dustyn Baulkham in the press release. "Not only is it another performance opportunity for locals, but it brings artists who might not otherwise have visited our area to the Okanagan."

Aspiring playwrights can submit their original works to the festival, but they should be quick about it. The application deadline is April 21 at 11:59 p.m. Applications can be completed here. The application fee is $30.

The Arts Council is committed to selecting 12 theatre companies for the festival, with three spots reserved for Okanagan-based performers.

There will be no curation in the play selection; plays will be chosen by a lottery. There will be no parameters or censorship and ticket prices will be kept low to ensure everyone can participate. All proceeds collected from ticket sales will go back to the artists.

"It’s egalitarian and open to all," Baulkham said.

The Arts Council noted in the release there was a Fringe festival in the Okanagan back in the 1990s, but this current festival is unconnected to the old one.

Anyone who wants to perform in the festival can apply here. If you want to stay in the loop about the festival, sign up for the newsletter here.
