New city buses arrive in Kelowna

City buses with numbers that begin with a 6, like the one pictured here, are brand new and just started arriving in Kelowna late last year.

KELOWNA – Public transit users in the Central Okanagan may have noticed the first of more than two dozen new buses coming to the Kelowna area.

Amalgamated Transit Union local 1722 president Scott Lovell says around 25 brand new diesel Novabuses have either already been delivered or are on their way. The first arrived late last year, with around 15 already working around the city.

Lovell says any of the buses that begin with the number 6 are the new ones.

“They only have a few thousand kilometres and that's only because they had to be driven here from Quebec. They’re beautiful," he says.

Two or three older versions are still being used in Kelowna, but they just can’t compare with the new model.

“There’s comfier seats, there’s more room,” he says. “The transmission and engine hook up really well so the ride itself is smoother for passengers.”

The new buses are also better for the environment. Their engines run on diesel fuel, like their predecessors, but the new ones incorporate a diesel exhaust fluid system.

“They’re super green,” Lovell says. “It really reduces the carbon footprint.”

The new buses look much the same as the old ones but can handle around 15 more standing passengers.

“The glass looks super modern. The aerodynamic sleekness hasn’t changed,” he says. “So far they drive beautifully.”
