National figure skating championships spin into town

McArthur Island Sport and Event Centre will be the home of the Adult Figure Skating Championships this weekend.

It may feel like spring outside but the rinks at McArthur Island Sport and Events Centre will be filled with ice-loving figure skaters this weekend for the Skate Canada Adult Figure Skating Championships.

The Valleyview Skating Club is hosting the event Friday, April 5, through Sunday, which will see hundreds of adult figure-skaters from across the country compete in four different disciplines: free skate, interpretive, ice dance and synchronized skating.

Skate Canada president Benoit Lavoie notes the unique event showcases people who have been skating for life, “the adult skaters have spent many hours on the ice perfecting their programs and living a healthy lifestyle. We are proud to showcase their accomplishments here in Kamloops.”

Held last year in Prince Edward Island, the championship is the culmination of the AdultSkate program which offers programming for adults from young adult through senior under several different banners from CanSkate to SynchroSkate.

Weekend and single event tickets are available at the registration desk at McArthur Island Sport and Events Centre.
