Turns out a toddler's headstone recovered by Penticton RCMP from a property in the city was a stolen funeral home sample.

RCMP sent out a media release yesterday, Feb. 3, looking for family members who might be able to identify and claim a headstone officers had recovered from a Penticton property on Jan. 14.

Penticton RCMP spokesperson Const. James Grandy said in an email today, Feb. 4, the owner of the headstone is a funeral home.

"We have identified the owner as being a funeral home, who confirmed it is a sample product and not an actual person's headstone," he writes.

It had been stolen from the funeral home property.

RCMP do not name the funeral home or say where it was located.
