Mysterious goat and chicken killer trapped and killed in Ellison

ELLISON – A young cougar that dismembered and killed some goats and chickens in Ellison last week has been caught and killed by the B.C. Conservation Officer Service.

A property owner in Ellison first alerted RCMP and the SPCA to a number of bloody carcasses she found on her property Oct. 26. She told Global Okanagan she called police because it looked to her like the work of humans.

Conservation officer Josh Martin disagrees.

“Upon investigation of the killed and injured animals it was determined that a cougar had attacked those animals,” he says. “On Tuesday a trap was set for that cougar and a cougar was removed from the property on Wednesday.”

Martin says a major reason they know it’s a cougar is from footage a trail camera captured the day before it was caught..

“A cougar was spotted Monday night coming out of the family’s barn,” he says. “It was attending the barn and livestock approximately 50’ from the residence so it was presenting a threat to human safety.”

He says the cougar was a female, less than a year old and in good health but had to be destroyed.

“That cougar was habituated and was a threat to public safety,” he says.
