Most flights between southern Interior and Vancouver cancelled

Westjet has pre-emptively cancelled most of its flights in B.C., Ontario and Quebec today.

Three dozen flights have already been cancelled today, Dec. 23, to and from Kamloops, Kelowna and Penticton airports.

Most of those are Vancouver flights.

Kelowna, being the busiest of the three airports is showing 26 cancellations so far today, along with 10 delays, so far.

Seven arrivals from Vancouver and three from Victoria have been cancelled while half (nine of 18) flights going to Vancouver have been cancelled.

Many of those still showing on the Kelowna airport website as being on time are later in the day.

One flight to Mazatlan has also been cancelled.

For Kamloops, three of four flights scheduled to arrive from Vancouver are cancelled. the one showing as on time on the airport’s website is scheduled for about 10 p.m. Three of three departures for Vancouver have been cancelled.

Both flights in and out of Penticton from Vancouver are marked as either cancelled or aborted.

Vancouver International Airport is still trying to recover from its shut down for much of Tuesday. It’s getting light snow this morning turning to ice pellets and freezing rain later today.

WestJet pre-emptively cancelled flights in and out of Vancouver until later today, weather permitting.

Eastern Canada and the U.S. are facing a once-in-a-decade storm that has already impacted air travel.

The storm brings a combination of rain, snow and wind.

WestJet pre-emptively cancelled all its flights in and out of Southern Ontario today and Air Canada cancelled many of its flights in the region.

More than 2,400 flights were cancelled in the U.S. yesterday and another 2,200 cancelled pre-emptively for today.
