Most B.C. workers would rather quit than return to the office permanently: Poll

More than half of British Columbians who worked from home during the pandemic say they'll likely find another job if their employer makes them come back to the office permanently.

A recent poll from Research Co. found that 53 per cent of workers said they were "very likely" or "moderately likely" to find a different job if they were not allowed to work from home as often as they wanted.

The poll found eight per cent had already left their employment because of this reason.

According to the poll only 11 per cent of B.C. residents that worked from home during the pandemic have returned to the office full-time.

Just under one-third (31 per cent) are now working from home permanently, while 32 per cent are working from home once or twice a week, and 25 per cent are there three to four times a week.

"There is a significant generational divide when it comes to the home office in British Columbia," Research Co. president Mario Canseco said in a media release. "While only 19 per cent of home workers aged 18-to-34 are not commuting at all, the proportion rises to 35 per cent among those aged 35-to-54 and to 47 per cent among those aged 55 and over."

Despite the number of people working from home, the poll found that there has been a decrease in virtual staff meetings and an increase in in-person meetings since January this year.

Twenty-seven per cent of employees said there had been more in-person staff meetings which is a 13-point increase compared to January.

The poll also found that 19 per cent of home workers were working from home more often than they'd like, while 18 per cent said they worked from home less often than they'd like to.
