Thousands of homes are without power across B.C.'s southern Interior following last night's wind storm.

According to B.C. Hydro, the hardest-hit areas are Vernon, Lake Country and Fernie, and there are outages across the region from Kamloops to the North Okanagan and the Shuswap.

B.C. Hydro says more than 20,000 customers have been affected in the Okanagan and Kootenay regions in 50 separate outages. A further 4,300 are without power in the Thompson and Shuswap regions.

According to B.C. Hydro strong winds caused extensive damage in the region, causing the power outages.

B.C. says crews will be continuing work throughout the day to safely restore power and reminds the public to stay back at least 10 metres and call 911 immediately if they discover a downed powerline.
