SUN PEAKS - Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality will receive roughly $300,000 from the province for projects which help support tourism infrastructure and facilities.

The funding comes from the Resort Municipality Initiative fund which helps to grow the tourism sector in eligible municipalities.

Sun Peaks has been participating in the initiative program since 2011. It has plans to spend its funding on projects whih expand recreational opportunities and encourage visitors to return to the community, including summer music events and recreation infrastructure improvements.

Sun Peaks mayor Al Raine says the majority of the funding will go towards the summer concert series, while a small portion will go towards the construction of a new ice rink. The funding allows the municipality to afford bigger and better musical acts, drawing more people to the series.

Summer concerts and events have been created to draw a more diverse group of visitors to the community, beyond those coming to Sun Peaks for skiing and snowboarding, he says.

Raine says he is pleased the province is encouraging tourism investment in smaller communities.

“The Resort Municipality Initiative assists resort oriented communities by providing funding, which when combined with the locally collected municipal and regional district tax and property taxes, provides balanced and significant funding to invest in needed tourism related infrastructure and programs and to market Sun Peaks.”
