Mohini Singh has officially dropped out of the race for the BC United candidacy in the riding of Kelowna-Lake Country-Coldstream.

She was one of six nominees but has now decided to bow out of the race.

“It was a very hard decision because I had an awesome team, and I had a ton of support, so I had to really think long and hard about it. In the end, it was a tough race and became very vitriolic and I didn’t like the tone of the race and where it was going so I decided to step down,” Singh, who is also a Kelowna city councillor, said. “It was very difficult for me to navigate the negative tone of this election, and I have taken part in a number of elections, but it’s never been like this. For one thing the attacks became a little too personal for me.”

Singh said she is not ready to speak on the personal attacks she received.

She had previously told iNFOnews that she was hoping to become MLA to make a bigger impact on her community and she felt like she could do so more efficiently through the provincial outlet rather than on the municipal level.

In the end, Singh says the race became too negative, which set a bad tone for the election and the job, so she felt she would be doing a disservice to the community if she had gone forward.

“I feel I am a strong voice at the city council level, I like what I am doing, I like my level of service to the people, and I am dedicated to the city and my work on the council. I felt like my heart was not there, so I made the decision to step down,” said Singh. “I am passionate about serving my community, I have always been a servant to the people and I will stay that way.”

While Singh will not endorse any of the five other nominees that have come forward to date, she hopes the BC United candidate will hold certain values and knowledge of the riding.

“I would like a candidate who is totally dedicated and devoted to the community. Someone who knows all the cultures and diversity of all the communities in the riding: from Lavington, through Oyama, through Rutland, through all the riding, because it is extremely diverse and every community has different social and economic requirements and needs, and the BC United candidate must know what the people need.”

Going forward she will focus on her job as a city councillor and continue putting all her energy into the community.

“I’m just going to go full-throttle serving my city,” states Singh.
