Lebanon news agency says army fires at Israeli soldiers along volatile border, 1 reported dead

Israeli soldiers guard near the border between northern Israel and Lebanon, Monday, Dec. 16, 2013. Israel’s army said Monday its troops shot two Lebanese soldiers, hours after a Lebanese army sniper killed an Israeli soldier as he drove along the border. The initial Lebanese shooting late Sunday and the Israeli retaliatory fire early Monday, both near Rosh Hanikra, Israel, raised the possibility of renewed fighting in the volatile area, which has remained mostly quiet since a month-long war in the summer of 2006. BEIRUT - Lebanon's official news agency says a Lebanese army force has opened fire on a group of Israeli soldiers along the two countries' volatile border.

Arab satellite TV channels Al-Jazeera and Al-Arabiya reported that an Israeli soldier was killed in the shooting.

The National News Agency said the shooting occurred near the Naqoura border crossing but did not provide more details. Lebanese security officials did not immediately comment.

It was not clear why the Lebanese soldiers opened fire. The army has opened fire in the past after they said Israeli soldiers tried to infiltrate the border area.
