Gulf Air says Manila-Manama flight hits severe turbulence

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - Bahrain's state carrier Gulf Air says severe turbulence on a flight from Manila to Manama caused some crew and passengers to suffer minor injuries.

Gulf Air issued a statement saying the flight Friday diverted to Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport after encountering the turbulence.

The air carrier said "one passenger received medical attention" while the flight was on the ground in India. It did not identify the type of plane involved, though flight-tracking websites identified it as an Airbus A330.

It said flight GF155 left Mumbai on Friday night after undergoing a safety inspection.

Severe turbulence suddenly can strike planes even in otherwise good weather.
