A teenager from Edmonton who was reported missing after she failed to show up to her junior high school has been found this morning.

The 13-year-old girl was found, July 2, in the state of Oregon, according to a press release from the Edmonton Police, but a specific location is not described. Her father, Martin Smith, appealed to residents in Kamloops and the Okanagan to help find her.

She was taken to a local children’s hospital for a exam described as a precautionary measure. Arrangements are being made reunite the girl with her family, who were notified this morning of the news.

A 41-year-old man from Oregon man is in custody and will be charged with child luring, with more possible charges coming as the investigation progresses, according to the Edmonton Police.

Edmonton Police defended the decision not to issue an AMBER Alert.

“At the initial stages of this investigation, there was no evidence to suggest she was with someone, so this file did not meet the criteria,” Staff Sgt. James Vanderland said in the release.

“An AMBER Alert was being prepared once we confirmed the credible tip of the suspect’s identity, his location, and his vehicle description; however, we were advised that the suspect was no longer in Canada so an AMBER Alert was no longer feasible.”
