High methane gas levels shut down Prince George sawmill where blast occurred

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. - High levels of methane gas at a Prince George, B.C., sawmill have prompted the company to shut down operations.

The high gas levels were discovered at the Lakeland Mills site, where an explosion last April killed two workers and injured two dozen others.

The company says it has temporarily closed its planer mill and district energy system as precautionary measures.

More details will be provided later today at a news conference.

Deadly explosions at central B.C. sawmills have been the focus of intense investigations since the Lakeland incident and the blast at the Burns Lake Lake Babine Forest Products sawmill in January, when two workers were killed.
