2 days, no verdict in Michigan Gov. Whitmer kidnap plot case
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — Jurors haven't come up with a verdict yet after two days of deliberations in the trial of four men accused of plotting to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. They'll return Wednesday for a third day of work. Adam Fox, Barry Croft Jr., Daniel Harris and Brandon Caserta are charged with conspiracy. Croft is from Delaware while the others are from Michigan. Defense lawyers argue that the group was manipulated by an informant who was taking direction from the FBI. Federal Judge Robert Jonker turned down the jury's request for trial transcripts. He says transcripts haven't been made, and they typically aren’t provided for jury deliberations.
ELECTION 2022-CONGRESS-UPTON
GOP Rep. Upton, who voted to impeach Trump, won't run again
LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Longtime Michigan Republican Rep. Fred Upton, who voted to impeach President Donald Trump over the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection, announced Tuesday he will not run for a 19th term in Congress. Upton, 68, is the fourth Republican who backed impeachment to not seek reelection. In February, Upton — a moderate — had aired a campaign ad that appeared to signal he was more likely to run. Redistricting put Upton and Republican Rep. Bill Huizenga in the same seat in southwestern Michigan. Former President Donald Trump recently endorsed Huizenga. He has worked to exact revenge on those who crossed him — recruiting, endorsing and campaigning for challengers running against them.

Detroit is largest city to challenge 2020 census numbers
DETROIT (AP) — Majority-Black Detroit has become the largest city to challenge its figures from the 2020 census following a national head count in which the U.S. Census Bureau acknowledges African Americans were undercounted. Leaders of Michigan’s largest city, which is more than three-quarters Black, had questioned the results of the 2020 census since last December when they released a report suggesting that more than 8% of the occupied homes in 10 Detroit neighborhoods may have been undercounted. The 2020 census data showed Detroit with 639,111 residents, while estimates from 2019 put the city’s population at 670,052 residents.

EXPLAINER: Charges in Michigan Gov. Whitmer kidnap plot case
CHICAGO (AP) — Jurors are deliberating at the trial of four men accused of plotting to abduct Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in 2020, following some four weeks of testimony. The headline charge in the case is kidnapping conspiracy, which was the focal point of testimony at the trial in federal court in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Prosecutors say the men plotted from June to October 2020 to abduct the Democratic governor at her second home in northern Michigan because they were furious by what they considered her overly restrictive policies during the pandemic. If convicted of the most serious charges, the defendants face maximum life prison terms.

McDonald's workers reach settlement deal over harassment
Former McDonald’s workers who alleged rampant sexual harassment at their Michigan restaurant have reached a $1.5 million settlement agreement with the restaurant’s former owner. The American Civil Liberties Union’s Women's Rights Project announced the settlement deal Monday. It must still be approved by a federal judge. Former McDonald’s worker Jenna Ries sued the franchisee and McDonald’s Corp. in 2019. She alleged that a general manager ignored repeated physical and verbal harassment by a male co-worker against her and 100 other women. The lawsuit was part of a broader push to combat harassment. McDonald's has since mandated anti-harassment training at its stores worldwide.
