Mexican man awaiting bail hearing on drug smuggling charges

Armando Esparza-Ochoa accused of drug smuggling, made a court appearance in Penticton via television today, Sept. 26, 2018.

PENTICTON - A Mexican man accused of smuggling drugs across the Canada-U.S. border near Osoyoos made a brief appearance in Penticton court this morning.

Armando Esparza-Ochoa was apprehended by border authorities on Sept. 1 near Osoyoos.

He has since been charged with smuggling amphetamines, possession of amphetamines for the purpose of trafficking and crossing the border illegally.

He appeared today via television link, with a Spanish interpreter providing translation.

Esparza-Ochoa has been assigned council, who has been provided with disclosure information at this time, Federal Crown Prosecutor Ashleigh Baylis said following this morning's proceedings.

Esparza-Ochoa will make a return court appearance on Oct. 24 to fix a date for a bail hearing.
